Reading Group

Discover the full depth and genius of Jane's work by participating in the JASNA Dayton Reading Group. This casual, light-hearted society meets four times a year to discuss Miss Austen's work over tea and light refreshments. You'll gain insights into Jane's working process, learn about the deeper meanings and influences behind her work, and enjoy "the company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation."

Note: You don't need to be a member of JASNA Dayton to attend Reading Group meetings. If you're new to the group, it's a great place to visit and get to know us!

Unless otherwise specified, Reading Group meetings are held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Jean Long’s home at 927 Far Hills (Route 48) in Oakwood. The back of her condominium faces Far Hills, so to enter, turn onto Park Avenue (left if you're going north on Far Hills, right if you're going south), and turn left almost immediately, just before the municipal building. (The street says city cars only.) You'll be on an alley that leads to the parking lot of Bob and Jean's building. A sidewalk runs between 2 sections of the complex. If you are facing Far Hills, Jean's condominium is on the right. If you have questions, call Jean at 937/298-0436 or e-mail us using the Contact page.

Reading Group Dates for 2011-2012

The Reading Group is currently discussing Emma. Scheduled dates are listed below. (All dates are subject to change.) Feel free to join us for the current session even if you missed our discussions of earlier chapters!

Some editions of Emma are organized by the original volume numbers, while others have a single numbered list of chapters. If your edition doesn't list volumes, use the chapter references in parentheses.

2012

  • April 15, Volume III, Chapters 8-13 (44-49)
  • May 6, Volume III, Chapters 14-19 (50-55)
This date is slightly earlier to avoid conflicts with Mother's Day on May 13.

Map of Emma's Highbury

Several members expressed an interest in seeing a map of Highbury during our February 2011 session. A theoretical version of this map has been posted by JASA (our Australian sister society), and may be viewed here.
